Positive Partner
What are the risks if my partner is also HIV-positive? Why would we use condoms if we’re both already positive?
Some people who are HIV+ decide to ‘play it safe’ by only having sex with other HIV+ people. While this does guarantee that HIV won’t be transmitted to someone who is negative, there are some risks associated with sex between two positive people. First and foremost, there is the risk of transmitting STDs. As we know, STDs are often much more difficult to treat in HIV+ individuals. Second, there is the risk of HIV Superinfection. Another consideration for two positive partners is the immune system itself. The body’s immune system is challenged every time an invader (like HIV) is introduced into the body. The immune system responds by activating the immune cells, which enables HIV to multiply. The presence of another person’s semen in your body provokes an immune response (including if that semen is HIV-). Ideally, you want to keep you immune system quiet and unchallenged. It is important to avoid any new exposure to HIV or other infectious agents. |
