Negative Partner

What if my partner is HIV-negative?

A couple in which one person is HIV- and the other is HIV+ is called a sero-discordant, or sero-opposite couple. There are many complicated issues that may arise in such relationships, and sexual health is almost certain to be among them. It can be stressful for both partners and there are no cut and dry answers that fit all couples. Many issues may come up. Preventing the HIV- partner from becoming HIV+ is likely to be the biggest. Maintaining the health of the HIV+ partner may also be an important issue.

Communicating openly and honestly about fears, desires, comfort levels and expectations is absolutely essential. This is true of ALL relationships, but it can be more of a challenge in sero-discordant relationships. It is also very important that both partners are educated about the risks of HIV transmission, and about other HIV-related topics. Specialized counseling is available for sero-discordant couples at The Center’s Health Services Department.
