Just for Youth
Young and Positive? If you’re between the ages of about 14 and 24, you’re considered a “youth” and there are programs and services in San Diego just for you. Here are two good places to start:
The Hillcrest Youth Center
The HYC is a drop-in center serving all of San Diego County for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning youth between the ages of 14 and 24. You can go to the Youth Center just to hang out, but also to find information, attend groups, meet people your age, and maybe learn something. Check out their website and give them a call!

Peer counseling
Peer counseling means you get to meet with a peer- someone who is living with HIV/AIDS- to figure things out. Peer counselors are knowledgeable about services, but they’ve also been through what you’re going through. Some people feel more comfortable talking with a peer counselor to start with.

Being Alive San Diego offers peer advocacy services. This is a great way to start learning about local resources because a peer advocate is someone who’s been through what you’re going through.

Counseling services
There are many counseling programs that are free or reduced-cost for people living with HIV/AIDS. The Guidebook lists many more. Here are a few places to start.

AIDS Case Management
The County runs an excellent program. AIDS Case Management is available for persons living with HIV/AIDS who need assistance accessing medical and supportive services. Case Managers develop individual service plans with clients to help them reach their goals for self-sufficiency and improved health status. The Intensive Case Management (ICM) program is a component of AIDS Case Management that was developed to assist people with HIV/AIDS who are also struggling with substance abuse and addiction disease.

Disclosure Assistance Services
Disclosure assistance means help with telling others about your HIV status. You may want support in telling partners, families, or others, and with deciding who to tell, how, when, etc.

Positive Action, San Diego
The Center also offers a disclosure assistance program. This is a free, voluntary and confidential service that can help you to tell people who you’ve had unprotected sex with that they might have been exposed to HIV. There are several ways to do that- the ex-partner doesn’t have to find out who you are unless you want to tell them yourself. Contact the Positive Action Coordinator to find out more or to make an appointment.

Drug and Alcohol treatment info
If you’ve had problems associated with drugs and/or alcohol, if you feel that drugs or alcohol have harmed you or those you love, or if you’re tempted to use drugs or alcohol to help to deal with the pain and stress of living with HIV/AIDS, get help!!!
